Public Hearing- Ban on Open Burning

I wanted to remind everyone that there is a Special Hearing in Belmont, on Thursday, August 7 at the Allegany County Office Building in the Legislator’s Chambers concerning the proposed rule that would ban most open burning statewide. At the moment, it is only banned in cities, villages and in town with population greater than 20,000. Also, the revised rule would limit agricultural burning to naturally grown products such as vines, branches, leaves and stubble. If will also specifically allow such things as fire training, small cooking and camp fires and ceremonial fires (e.g., proper disposal of U.S. Flag by open burning). The DEC will hold a public information session for one hour prior to the public hearing. During this session, the DEC staff will answer questions from the public concerning the proposed rulemaking. The information session will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by the public hearing from 5 – 8 p.m. Anyone wishing to make a statement will be invited to speak. The DEC is requesting that oral statements also be submitted in writing. The DEC will give equal weight to written and oral statements. Further information may be obtained from:
